Gas Appliances

TYPE 3 GAS APPLIANCES – This refers to gas appliances generally above 250 MJ/hr input rating and would mainly apply to commercial and industrial appliances. This is for electronically and/or mechanically controlled gas appliances and equipment, and to one-off designs. Typical examples of type 3 appliances are commercial bakery ovens, large boilers and some appliances which are also used domestically, instantaneous water heaters, spa pool heaters, gun type burners and so on. Many gas appliances have a combination of type 1, 2 and 3 controls. For example a cooker may have 230 v ignition and a flame rectification safety device fitted to the cook top while having a thermo-electric safety device fitted to the oven. There are many overlaps in the lighting, the flame failure controls and the method of flame control in all three categories. The basic knowledge of control transects all appliances and a thorough knowledge of the gas ignition, controls and safety devices is required before any work on gas appliances is performed. Euro Plumbing strongly recommend that only a qualified and experienced gas fitter preform such work.

Some common gas appliances are, Salamanders, commercial stoves, commercial wok burners, gas fryers and dishwashers.

14 Step Gas Fitting Process

A comprehensive commercial appliance service begins with a thorough cleaning and detailed visual inspection. Technicians carefully remove dust from fans and all accessible surfaces, as accumulation can impede performance. The process includes a meticulous visual check of all components, identifying any loose wiring, insecure fittings, or corroded parts. Special attention is given to the flue to ensure it is clear of blockages, such as birds’ nests, and that there is no spillage that could adversely affect operation. Burners are also closely inspected, as they are prone to corrosion from condensation, which can block ports and interfere with the critical flame signal required for safe ignition.

Following the initial inspection, the focus shifts to the critical ignition and safety systems. The flame probe, a common point of failure, is carefully cleaned to remove build-up and ensure a reliable connection. Technicians verify that the flame establishes quickly and that the pilot cleanly lights the main burner without delay. All safety mechanisms are rigorously tested, including the overheat switch, thermostats, and pressure switches, to confirm they operate according to manufacturer specifications. The burner is cycled on and off multiple times to ensure pre-purge and post-purge functions operate correctly, guaranteeing a safe and efficient start-up and shutdown. Upon completion, a full checklist is provided with the service results and a recommendation for the next service date.

Gas Hob (gas cook top) installation .. cont.

Requirement 1 Overhead clearances—(Measurement A) Range hoods and exhaust fans shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s relevant instructions. However, in no case shall the clearance between the highest part of the hob of the gas cooking appliance and a range hood be less than 600 mm or, for an overhead exhaust fan, 750 mm. Any other downward facing combustible surface less than 600 mm above the highest part of the hob shall be protected for the full width and depth of the cooking surface area in accordance with Clause 6.10.1.2. However, in no case shall this clearance to any surface be less than 450 mm. (b) Requirement 2 Side clearances—(Measurements B and C) Where B, measured from the periphery of the nearest burner to any vertical combustible surface is less than 200 mm, that surface shall be protected in accordance with Clause 6.10.1.2 to a height C of not less than 150 mm above the hob for the full dimension (width or depth) of the cooking surface area. Where the gas cooking appliance is fitted with a ‘splashback’, protection of the rear wall is not required. (c) Requirement 3 Additional requirements for freestanding and elevated gas cooking Appliances—(Measurements D and E) Where D, the distance from the periphery of the nearest burner to a horizontal combustible surface is less than 200 mm, then E shall be 10 mm or more, or the horizontal surface shall be above the trivet. NOTES: 1 Requirement 3 does not apply to a freestanding or elevated gas cooking appliance which is designed to prevent flames or the cooking vessels from extending beyond the periphery of the gas appliance. 2 The ‘cooking surface area’ is defined as that part of the gas appliance where cooking normally takes place and does not include those parts of the gas appliance containing control knobs. 3 Consideration is to be given to window treatments when located near cooking appliances.
